Tusk has been one of the most popular heroes in DotA lately, and he feels very strong in this version. One of the biggest strengths of Tusk is his versatility as you can play him in virtually every role you want. The only thing which feels awkward is getting level 2 if you want to play a mobile / roaming Tusk; you generally don’t want to leech XP on a lane and leave the lane as it will put your ally into a disadvantage. Even pulling small camps is unreliable as it is often warded and even if it is not, you want to enable your other support to get some XP from those camps.

Getting to level 2 without burdening your team mates is an issue a lot of roaming heroes face (), and it often determines whether a roamer can keep up with the pace of the game or not. However, I found a pretty reliable solution to this for Tusk if you’re playing radiant, which I will show in this post. You can check out the full video on YouTube for a visual overview with some comments, and I have described things more in detail below.

Cutting the tree

We start out by cutting the tree . This is the only tree you have to cut and you need to cut it as otherwise the creeps might wait for the shards to disappear and walk back rather than going around. The reason for this is that their behavior depends on the distance of the alternative, and cutting this tree makes them behave the way we want them to.

Pulling the neutral camp

At any xx:31 timing you can pull the neutral camp and use Ice Shards to make them go around as shown above. Keep in mind that pulling them at their initial spawn (0:31) is close to impossible and I was only able to do it in this video as I manually spawned neutrals before 0:30.

Pulling the second camp

Not all camps will get you level 2 right away. You can follow this pull up with another Ice Shard cast to kill the second camp and get your level 2 if needed as shown above.

While there are a lot of pulls possible which are pretty cool and creative, I believe a lot of them aren’t as efficient as we’d like them to be, and I actually think this is one of the most efficient “advanced” pulling methods for a few reasons:

Not a lot of resources are needed. You won’t need to buy a Quelling Blade or waste a lot of tangos for this to work, allowing you to buy extra support items for the team.
It gives the mid lane an advantage, denying creeps from the opponent mid lane. Please note that it’s a good idea to inform your mid lane if you are going to pull this.
After getting level 2 you are already at mid lane, which is often the easiest lane to gang.
The pull is pretty reliable and works in almost all cases. I do recommend practicing it a few times in a private lobby to get the timing down.
I hope this helps and if you have any suggestions, comments or questions, leave a comment either on the article or the YouTube video. You can also subscribe to our YouTube channel if you like the content. Thanks to everyone for watching, now go Walrus Punch the sh*t out of people.
